Introduction of Kanji (5thβ6th Century)

Writing came from China via Korea.

Chinese characters (Kanji) were adopted.

At first, Japanese people wrote in classical Chinese style.
Samurai to Modern Era

During the Edo period, language became more standardized.

After the Meiji Restoration, Japan modernized.

Western words entered Japanese β written in Katakana.
Creation of Hiragana & Katakana (9th Century)
Japanese grammar is very different from Chinese.

So Japanese people simplified Kanji into:
- Hiragana (flowing, cursive style β used mainly by women in early times)
- Katakana (angular, used by monks for study)
This made Japanese writing unique β a mix of meaning-based (Kanji) and sound-based (Kana) scripts.
Why Is Japanese
Unique in the World?
Three Writing Systems Together
Very few languages use three scripts at the same time.
